The death toll has risen to 21, and houses in many cities and towns have collapsed and suffered serious damage.
According to comprehensive US media reports, in northern Illinois, the roof of a theater collapsed due to strong winds and hailstorms on the night of March 31. About 260 people were watching a concert in the theater at the time of the incident. A 50-year-old man was killed at the scene and around 40 people were injured, at least two seriously. In Crawford County, the state, a tornado killed three people and damaged several homes.
In Arkansas, five people were killed and at least 50 injured by a powerful tornado.
Tennessee officials confirmed that at least seven people in the state were killed by tornadoes.
The tornado also killed five people in Indiana, Alabama and Mississippi, and caused some damage in eastern Iowa.
Bill Bunting, an expert at the US Storm Prediction Center, said that in addition to tornadoes, the agency also received hundreds of reports of hail and damaging winds.
American meteorologists said that as the global climate warms, extreme weather such as tornadoes and thunderstorms will become more frequent in the Midwestern and southern parts of the United States.
